Chez Panisse Plum Galette

Chez Panisse plum galette baked

I went to Chez Panisse for my 30th birthday and it was the most wonderful experience. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend going, regardless of whether or not you have something to celebrate. They really showcase what’s in season, which is how I get inspired to bake. The kitchen is connected to the restaurant and the staff encourages you to walk through as they’re cooking. I got up several times throughout the meal to check in on what they were doing, lingering mainly by the pastry station, of course. It was fall at the time (shout-out to fellow November babies!), so the chefs were making an apple version of their signature galette.

Jacques Torres’ Chocolate Chip Cookies

What’s my favorite chocolate chip cookie, you ask? It’s from Jacques Torres Chocolate in New York City. Ask for it warmed and it’s heavenly. Crispy on the edges, chewy in the middle, and most importantly, with delicious melty puddles of chocolate. Sadly, I’m not in NYC often enough to get my fix, so, luckily, there is a recipe.

Toasted Black Sesame Ice Cream

Humphry Slocombe is one of my favorite ice cream shops in San Francisco. The menu changes daily to incorporate inventive, seasonal flavors. A few of my favorites include Candy Cap (winter), White Miso Peach (summer) and Black Sesame (ongoing). The latter is one of the best versions of sesame I’ve ever had. It has a strong flavor and the flecks of sesame add a nice texture. The flavor is available on and off throughout the year. So, the next best thing when I’m craving it, is to make it.

Birthday Cake Croissants

A month ago, I went to the new Union Fare food hall in NYC, where Chef Thiago just launched a croissant spread in crazy flavors including red velvet, cookies ‘n cream, creme brûlée, Matcha and the super Instagrammable birthday cake. At the time, there was only a little buzz about the funfetti-style croissant, so I managed to get by without lines or sold-out signs. I’m not sure how it is now but I just couldn’t wait till my next NY trip so I decided to re-create them.
